The Novel: Takeoff

It’s now been seven days since my book, Internal Lockdown, came out.

This time last week I was anticipating the release in the same way I approach a flight: hoping that everything goes well, but always keeping in mind that I could end up in a smoking wreck. So many things can go wrong. I mean, maybe I really can’t write. My former students will discover I’m a fraud. Is there a list of the worst books ever written?

I must say that my novel’s “pilots”, Prodigy Gold Books, took care of all the details and the takeoff was flawless. They spent nine months walking me through the process (which I trust), getting an editor who terrified me with a twelve page, single-spaced critique, designing the cover, writing the book blurb, getting me reviewed, printing the book, publicizing etc. It is dizzying.

The reaction has been unexpected. And gratifying. Heck, my bucket list item was fulfilled the moment I held a physical copy of the novel. Granted, I’m existing in my own tiny corner of the universe, but the amount of positive reaction has been stunning even it is coming mostly from family, friends, former colleagues, and former students I taught in high school.

Hundreds of reactions on Facebook to my release announcement, a huge number of shares, pictures posted, comments made.

A few have even posted reviews on Amazon!

“Everything about this book was excellent!! It was written with realism and was so suspenseful. I could hardly put the book down and 2 of the 3 days it took me to finish it.”

“I couldn’t put the book down. Best story that I have read in years.”

“I could not put it down.”

“The level of detail and emotion still caught me off guard and had me thinking about it for days. Well-written.”

Whew! Wheels up.
