Today was Pick-Up-Dom Day, as most Wednesday’s have been. Dom is now in pre-K, so we have to get there an hour earlier. Nevertheless, he was energetic as usual, and thank goodness it his mother who corralled him to get dressed this morning.
The topics of discussion during the ride mainly focused on church bells and lighthouses. We passed a couple of churches, and Dom wanted to know why the bells were not ringing. I was impressed that he could pick out churches along the way. Our new word for the day became “steeple” after he wanted to know where the bells are. “What’s a steeple?” he inquired, and the best I could do was point out the “pointy-thing on top of the church.” That seemed to satisfy him.
As we passed a few more churches, he asked if each was the church I went to. “My church is near my house,” I tried to explain, without much success, obviously, since he asked at every church.
At Thanksgiving dinner at our house, Dom picked up a lighthouse-shaped candle holder, kicking off a conversation about lighthouses. We sat together and googled images of lighthouses on my phone. That piqued his interest. He took my phone and flipped through the pictures on his own.
Today, he got back to the lighthouses and asked about them. I told him that when he went to the shore house, maybe he could visit a real lighthouse. That prompted a comment that he wanted to be a scuba diver!
I asked how pre-K was going and his reply was, “I want to go home.” Uh oh! That put me on yellow alert. I mean, what am I going to do if he won’t get out of the car when we get there. All the sniffling from the car seat probably meant he had a cold and wasn’t feeling great. That led to another new word, “handkerchief”. Plus, he is still adjusting to a more regimented schedule in his new room. His mother warned him, before we left, not to give his teacher a hard time about putting his coat on.
But, he was fine by the time we got to daycare. It helped that he was delighted when I took a speed bump a little too quickly! He exited the car, after checking for the thing “jingling” behind him during the ride. No idea.
We signed in, put his stuff in his cubicle. He wanted to show me his paintings, three of them. Dom explained that he had learned to use a roller. I asked him to save me one.
Next to the sink. He “hid” behind me as we walked over, and he told me to go first, which I did.
He seemed fine. We said our goodbyes to another Wednesday ride to daycare.

Now that I have met Dom, it’s even more fun to read about him.
Just don’t catch his cold!
